Christ "The Mystery of the Cross"

This copy of a 19th century Russian icon is of a very unique, rare, and interesting theme. In this icon Christ is illustrated carrying his own cross to Golgotha, while the crosses in the background represent (and, in fact, are labeled as) common struggles that the faithful endure. This depiction is reminiscent of the words of the Savior in the Gospel, "If any man would come after me, let him deny himself, take up his cross and follow me." Matthew 16:24
